What I Do
Documentary Photography & Film
Recording the present of a place, its people and its culture.
Based in Kumamoto, I make documentary work in photography and film.
What I want to photograph is not only the finished thing.
The people who are there.
Working hands.
The landscape of the land.
Light and sound.
What has been handed down.
And what is still in the middle of changing.
I record over time, including the background behind a place or a person.
From work for companies and brands to regions, inns, culture, international cooperation and the practice of individuals.
Even when a photograph or a film is made for advertising, what matters to me is what was actually there.
Documentary
Recording the present of people and society.
Regions, culture, international cooperation, the environment, social work.
I go to the place, meet people, listen to them, and photograph while spending the same time they do.
Rather than only capturing an agreed shot list, I observe what is happening in front of me and record it as photographs and film.
I take on short assignments as well as continuous records spanning months or years.

Place & Hospitality
Photographing the time that runs through a place.
Inns, hotels, ryokan, architecture, regions, nature.
Not only the shape of a building, but the light coming through the window, the people cooking, the surrounding landscape, the air as it turns from morning into night.
I photograph how people spend their time there, and what kind of time runs through the place.
I also make visuals for websites, advertising, booklets and social media. But rather than temporary promotional material, I aim for photographs and films that remain as a record of the place.

Recording people as they live and work.
Craftspeople, cooks, farmers, artists, business owners.
Not only the finished product, but the person who makes it and the time behind it.

Long-term Documentation
I want to take on more work that records long stretches of time.
There are things a single day of shooting cannot show.
Land that changes with the seasons.
Work that is passed on.
The time it takes to build a building.
How a region changes.
A person growing up.
I also work on projects that follow one place or one person continuously over half a year, a year, or longer.
Archives for companies and regions, anniversary records and project records are all welcome.

I handle the whole process, from planning and research through shooting, editing and colour grading.
Based in Kumamoto, Japan
Based in Kumamoto, I work throughout Kyushu, Japan and internationally.
Fukuoka, Saga and the rest of Kyushu, Tokyo and elsewhere in Japan, as well as projects overseas. Distant locations and long-term assignments are welcome.
It is fine if nothing has been decided yet.
